The public hangings of Amirhossein Safari and Abolfazl Sepahi in Isfahan have become a chilling symbol of Iran's escalating execution campaign. As the world focuses on war, Tehran is rapidly carrying out death sentences against protesters arrested during January's nationwide uprising.

HUGE day for Ukraine.
I examine an extraordinary day of reported Ukrainian operations: strikes on four oil depots in Krasnodar Krai, defense plants in Tula and Voronezh, and Russian drone, radar, electronic-warfare, air-defense, and maritime assets. Ukraine says seven refineries were hit over the preceding week at ranges of up to 1,600 kilometers behind the front. I assess why sustained pressure on fuel distribution, air defense, and drone infrastructure could impose costs well beyond any single strike.

I also break down Operation Vivaldi near Liman, where Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps says it captured more than 250 Russian personnel after trapping forces west of the Zherebets River. Ukrainian reporting listed 2,090 Russian casualties for the day, alongside major equipment losses, while Russian attacks killed civilians and damaged sites across multiple Ukrainian regions. In this update, I break down Witkoff’s extraordinary opening remarks to Putin, including a translation nuance that quickly drew attention in Russian media. I also examine Yuri Ushakov’s account of the closed-door meeting and dinner, where Putin presented the Russian version of the battlefield, repeated Moscow’s demand to address the so-called “root causes” of the war, and pushed propaganda claims about Ukraine.

The talks also went beyond Ukraine. According to the Russian account, the two sides discussed potential large-scale Russian-American economic projects. Witkoff and Kushner then left Moscow for Kyiv, where they are expected to meet Ukrainian leaders and hear directly about the reality of Russia’s war.

Ukraine endured an extremely dangerous day of Russian attacks stretching from western regions to the front-line areas, with ballistic strikes hitting Odesa and parts of the city losing power. President Zelenskyy warned that Russia is preparing to intensify attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure as the country moves toward fall and winter.

In this update, I break down the scale of the attacks, including more than 500 Russian attack drones reported during the day, the suspension of rail service into Sumy, strikes on civilian and economic targets, and the growing pressure from sharply rising fuel prices. At the same time, Ukraine continued striking military bases and industrial targets supporting Russia’s war effort.
